Going to Ghana

Plans are in the works for me to go back to Ghana this winter!!!  We are still
in the early planning stages but I need to get started early if I'm going to have all
my fund raising done in time.

I'm really looking forward to loving on all those cute kids again!!!

And seeing some new sights and adventures!

I will be selling various hand made items including bracelets, blankets and maybe
some beanies in my Etsy Shop.  Right now the shop is pretty bare, but I plan to get
more listings up this week.

I also plan to post updates of my progress and trip planning here on the blog over
the next few months.

Bon Voyage!!!

Mother's Day

L has been really into helping out in the kitchen, especially
mixing or egg cracking you might have.
So for mother's day, we made homemade
sourdough waffles!
Sourdough Starter Recipe:
one cup warm water
one cup all purpose flour
1 tsp flour

mix in glass or ceramic bowl.  let set for 2-3 days. stir occasionally.
once starter develops sweet smell, place in air tight
container and refrigerate.

the recipe was martha stewart's except i used whole wheat flour instead of regular.  (and we didn't have any regular sugar so secretly i used brown o:)

Here they are below topped with strawberries.  gotta get something healthy in there somewhere right?!

Here's the sour dough starter all dolled up.
After all the cooking fun, we out for a momma daughter to get our nails done.  It was L's very first trip to the nail salon.  she loved it and actually tolerated sitting still....unfortunately she finished before i did and no longer wanted to be still.  LESSON LEARNED! momma goes first!!

Soccer

L was just old enough for soccer this year.  after a rocky start to the season and some spring time coughs and colds, she really came on strong for the end of the season.

here's a shot of her foot work as she scored her very first goal!

Better Late Than Never?

Whoa! I haven't blogged in over a month and it's no surprise here.  But, better late than never I suppose.  Here's a recap of what we did over easter.

We colored easter eggs using koolaid.  Fun. colorful. tasty.

one egg broke en route from the grocery store.  oops.

we mixed 1 cup water with assorted flavors of koolaid.

Here's a shot of L getting in on the action.

After we finished L had to get in on the picture taking fun.  Here she is using my phone to take pics.  Future blogger??  I love how she's squinting one eye :)

we also made our own version of resurrection rolls.  by the time we made it to the grocery store, they were out of croissant rolls.  i guess everyone had the same idea that we did.  we improvised with cinnamon rolls.  (which i think were tastier!)

The easter bunny also came to visit.  for whatever reason I didn't get that captured on camera.  or, maybe i just can't find them. lol  we had our egg hunt and even included resurrection eggs in our hunt.

Happy LATE Easter everyone!

Textile Tuesday

I think I've said this before, but it's super crazy at the jandafarns house lately.  High school softball, baseball and track at J's work.  Little league soccer with L (that is whole other post by itself.  coming soon!)  Plus, the weather has been great, so who wants to me inside blogging? ok, secretly, I do.  Who, knew this could be so much work??
Well, anyway.  Here's my textile tuesday and work in progress wednesday all in one.  I know I've been neglecting the blog lately....hopefully I can catch up soon! :)

This is the stash for the DC Metro Quilt I'm making for my sister She's giving it as a grad school graduation gift.  See those cute little fingers on the left??  That's L.  My little helper.  (Another reason, I've been to busy blog lately :)
One night with my Go!Baby in front of the tv and I'm making progress.  I better hurry if my quilt making is going to be anything like my blogging!  May is just around the corner!

March Madness

It's march madness at our house.  My remote has been stolen by the NCAA.  My bracket has been shot by Cinderella stories and sleeper teams. (my husband is secretly breathing a sigh of relief)  The only hope I have is that I picked Baylor to win it all :)  In honor of the basketball antics here are a few fun pictures thanks to my sister and fellow "green and golder."

Spring Break 2012

Any new sewing or crochet projects were put on hold this week because.....it was spring break for J!!!  Little L and I were way excited :)
Here's a recap in pictures of our week.

The Lorax in 3D.  L actually wore her glasses correctly the whole time.
"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better.  It's not." ~Dr. Seuss
Of course there was some play time in the sprinkler.  Here's an action shot of L showing off her new bathing suit for this season.
A close up of the cuteness.
We made a container garden.  Well I should say I made a container garden.   L helped me pic out colors of chalk for the labels.  Otherwise her "help" was to spread the dirt out on the porch, not actually get any in the pots.  Haha.
Since it's spring, the produce at the grocery store has been looking much better.  So we made plenty of juices for the whole family.  You can read more about the juice here.

Monday will be back to the grind stone as they say.  Happy Spring Break to everyone!!!

Beet Juice

*** you will need a juicer (not food processor/blender) to make this juice ***

There's something you should know about before reading this post.  Given the choice, I would eat nothing but chocolate all day.  0:)  I just don't particularly like the way veggies taste.  Knowing that, I can tell you that this juice is not only tolerable but.....kinda tasty.  Whew.  There, I said it.

All jokes aside, the juice is pretty good.  Especially considering that it full of fruits and veggies.  It's so good my four year old not only drink its, but asks for it.

What you'll need for the juice:

1 beet.  approximately lemon sized.  much bigger and the juice will be somewhat bitter
1 radish
4 carrots
2 celery stalks
1apple
1 lemon
1 orange (optional) my husband throws them in there, i can't taste a difference.

I put them through the juicer in that order.  The more citrus items help flush out more of the juice from the first items.

Then out comes......

Beautiful beet juice.  I know, it seems like an oxymoron.

Positive Affirmation

So I've been getting a few hits on my shop from project nursery.  I had never heard of this site before, so today during "quiet time" I thought I'd head on over there and see what it was all about.  From my brief visit there, what  I can tell is that it's a social networking site where people can share photos of how they are preparing for their new baby.  Pretty cool I thought.  About 4 pages in, I came across this picture..
room from door
So cute, right?  Did you notice that blanket draped over the chair????  That my chevron blanket!  It's so neat to see it in it's natural habitat! lol.  I love the colors of the nursery especially the pops of blue!  It's really cool to see  that she is using something I made for this special occasion.

Textile Tuesday

the best local quilt shop that i have found in my area is a good 45 minute drive from my house.  with gas getting closer to 4$ a gallon i don't get to go very often.  but last week, we were driving right by it on a way to one of my husband's play off games.  BONUS!
they were having a fat tuesday fat quarter sale.  this could be bad. :)  keep in my i went in looking to see if they had any of the helicopter print from the Ready Set Go line.  here's what i came out with...
 no helicopters, lol
not sure why i was ended up with this combination other than i've recently noticed i don't have enough reds and orange in my stash.  i've also been planning to make a throw pillow cover for our living room area which has red and aqua walls.
these two are my favorites.

Taco Ring

Looking for a quick, easy and fun dinner for the whole family?  Look no further!  I first had this back in college when my roommate showed me how to make it.  Thanks Kerry! I have since added my own little touches at the end.
What you'll need:
2 cans of croissant rolls
approx 1 lb of ground meat (i used turkey here)
1 pkg of taco season or your preferred taco seasoning
any additional sides.  lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, guacamole, etc.

first take your rolls and spread them out in a circle like so.  I used a pizza pan b/c it helps me get the circle shape.  make sure the edges of the rolls over a lap a good bit to give you enough width to hold the meat. if you don't have a round pan a rectangle pan works just fine, you'll just have to shape the circle yourself.  next brown your meat and add the seasoning as directed on the packet.  spoon your seasoned meat onto your rolls.
as you can see i didn't plan a head very well when i spread the rolls out and the ends fell over the edge of the counter. :)  oops!
next fold the ends of the rolls over the meat and into the center of the ring.
bake the ring according the baking directions for the rolls.  the meat is already cooked so you don't have to worry about how long that cooks.  just gotta get the rolls nice and flaky!
voila! a nice golden brown taco ring.  In the picture above, i had added the cheese to the meat mixture before baking.  you can add it there or as you'll see in the next picture you can add it later.  here's where the fun part comes in...
add all your favorite fixings to the middle of the ring. here i made a taco salad with shredded lettuce chopped tomatoes and shredded cheese.  you can really do anything here like rice or guacamole.    my family loves this meal.  we set the plate in the middle of the table and dig in.  even the little one tears into the lettuce and tomatoes!  Hope you enjoy!

It's a chunky crochet.  That's a size N, or some other ridiculous size, hook that my SISTER gave me.  gotta love sisters!  I hope to make one of those big floor poofs/bean bag/pillows thingies.  you know what i'm talking about right?  if not here's a SOME INSPIRATION!
